Celebrating Public Power

History of Public Power in Klickitat County

In October, we join 2,000 other customer-owned utilities in celebrating public power. What's the big deal about being served by a customer-owned, public power utility? Consider:

  • Public power means that you are served by your hometown power company, one that is committed to Klickitat County. When you phone for help, you talk to a local person, not an answering service in another state.

  • Public power means electricity is provided as a customer service and rates are based on the cost of service. They aren't padded to make a profit for stockholders.

  • Improvements to the system -- like our new power plant at the Roosevelt landfill -- build equity in the system you own. Today that equity is equal to more than $3,000 per customer.

  • Public power also means local control. Decisions about your power company are made by a locally-elected Board of Commissioners. These three citizens -- Randy Knowles of White Salmon, plus Dan Gunkel and Ray Mosbrucker of Goldendale -- do PUD business at open, public meetings. The public is always welcome to attend and offer their input.

So, is public power something to celebrate? We think so!
