Meet Landfill Project Engineer, Darby Hanson
EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program

The landfill power plant's new new engine is eased through an access door and onto rollers at the plant’s generation building.

The fifth engine was delivered and installed at the PUD’s H.W. Hill Landfill Gas Power Plant in May 2000, boosting the plant’s generating capacity to 10.5 megawatts.

When the Roosevelt, Wash. plant was built in June 1999, there was enough methane to fuel four engines but we projected sufficient methane to fuel a fifth engine within one year. We are pleased to report that those projections were correct. The methane at the landfill will continue to increase as waste decomposes. We expect the landfill could one day support up to 20 engines and generate up to 45 megawatts of electricity.
