Power Plant Wins State Pollution Prevention Award
Governor Gary Locke congratulates PUD Board President Randy Knowles on the state pollution prevention award given to the local H.W. Hill Landfill Gas Power Plant.

Klickitat PUD’s H.W. Hill Landfill Gas Power Plant has been named a 2000 Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award winner by the state Dept. of Ecology. The PUD joins nine businesses and two government facilities in being recognized for sustainable pollution prevention practices, or “practices that meet business needs successfully without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” according to Tom Fitzsimmons, Director of DOE.

Judges were impressed by the plant’s productive use of methane, a natural byproduct of waste decomposition at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill (and a destructive greenhouse gas). Eighty percent of the methane produced at the landfill is captured and used to generate 10.5 megawatts of clean, renewable energy at half the cost of other renewable power.

The judges also saluted the PUD, one of the smallest in the state, for its leadership in becoming one of the region’s largest green power producers. According to DOE, there were 47 applicants for the pollution prevention awards. Winners were selected by a panel of pollution prevention experts and labor and environmental groups.

“The awards are issued annually to businesses and government agencies that have found ways to offer services and make products while generating less or no hazardous waste, and conserving vital resources such as energy and water,” according to DOE.
