Energy Conservation Tips
Cracked Windows | Furnace Filters | Heat Pumps | Sunny Day Heating When it's cold, you'd be surprised
A cracked window may not seem like a big deal, but it can let a lot of cold air into your house. And let a lot of warm air out. If you have a cracked window, it will pay to have it fixed. That way, you won't have to worry about cold air slipping into your house this winter. A new furnace filter costs about $1.
When was the last time you changed your heating and cooling system filters? If it has been a while, it might pay to take a look. Chances are the filter is coated with dirt. And lint. Which makes your heating and cooling system work a lot harder and consume a lot more electricity. And that means higher power bills. It pays to change your heating and cooling system filters regularly. Somewhere under there is a heat pump . . .
Heat pumps are usually tucked away out of sight. Which makes that same spot a great place to store stuff -- lawn chairs, wading pools and garden pots. That can create a real problem. The heat pump itself could be damaged. It will struggle to get enough air to operate, driving up your electric consumption and your monthly bill. Take a look at your heat pump. Make sure it's clear of household items, leaves and debris. You may even need to wash it down with a garden hose. And don't forget to check the filters inside the house. Then you and your heat pump can both breathe easier. Free heat for those
The sun delivers enormous amounts of heat to most homes, even on the coldest winter day. And you don't need a high-tech, elaborate solar heating system to take advantage of it. In most cases, you can use the sun to supplement your own heating system by simply letting it into your home by opening shades, blinds and draperies. Studies show that the smart use of the sun can make a difference in the temperature of a room -- and you can't beat the price.
